Convertio alternatives for batch WAV to MP3
Convertio's own pages disagree on the free limit. Five alternatives for a folder of WAVs, target size and server-side batch, checked on 23 October 2026.
Checked: 23 October 2026 · vendor pages · 3-file WAV batch + target-size test
For a folder of WAVs and a target file size, the browser batch tool is the shortest route. For hundreds of files, per-file settings or an unattended job, FreeConvert, CloudConvert or ffmpeg is the realistic choice.
Convertio's help center says 1 GB per file and 10 credits per 24 hours, while its terms still describe 100 MB and 10 conversion minutes, checked on 23 October 2026. Alternatives for a WAV folder are this browser batch tool (queue, target size, no upload), FreeConvert or CloudConvert (server-side batch) and ffmpeg (unattended automation).
| Tool | Runs | Free limit | Best for | Not for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| convertwavtomp3.com | Browser tab | No daily count; 500 MB ZIP ceiling; device memory | A folder of WAVs, target size, no upload | Hundreds of files, per-file settings, API |
| FreeConvert | Servers | 20 conversion minutes/day; 5 min/file | Server-side batch, broad format list | A file that must not be uploaded |
| CloudConvert | Servers | 10 conversions/day; 1 GB/file; 5 min/job | Server-side breadth and API | A file that must not be uploaded |
| Zamzar | Servers | 50 MB general; 2 files/24h | An occasional small WAV | A folder batch |
| ffmpeg | Desktop / CLI | Free, no service limit | Unattended batch, VBR, huge files | Anyone who does not want a command line |
Why people look for a Convertio alternative
Convertio is a very broad converter. The reasons to look elsewhere are specific:
- The free limit is unclear. Its own help center and terms describe different caps: 1 GB/10 credits/10 concurrent vs 100 MB/2 concurrent/10 minutes. A user cannot plan a batch around two numbers.
- The job is a folder of WAVs. A batch queue and a target file size are more useful than 300 format checkboxes.
- The file is private. Uploading a client voice-over or an unreleased mix creates a server copy.
- The free tier is metered. Credits per day, whatever the exact number is.
- The destination is a hard size limit. “Make these WAVs fit under 50 MB” is a different job from “convert them”.
None of those require a verdict on Convertio as a product. They describe a different job.

How we picked
We kept tools that can convert more than one WAV and compared:
- Batch model (sequential browser queue, server concurrency, CLI loop).
- The public free limit on 23 October 2026.
- Whether a target file size is supported.
- Whether the file is uploaded.
- Per-file settings.
- Unattended operation.
We did not run a 500-file benchmark. We did not test every server’s per-file settings UI.
The shortlist in one paragraph each
convertwavtomp3.com is the browser batch option. It queues WAVs sequentially, converts with LAME, offers a target size for a single file, and returns individual downloads or a ZIP under 500 MB. No upload, no account, no daily count. It is the best fit for a folder of WAVs you can watch, especially when the output has a size limit.
FreeConvert is the server-side batch option. Its free tier is 20 conversion minutes/day with a 5-minute cap per file; paid plans start at $12.99/month and advertise 100 conversions at a time. It is better for a large unattended batch. It uploads the files.
CloudConvert is the server-side breadth/API option: 10 conversions/day, 1 GB per file, 5 minutes per job on the free tier. It is better for an API or a format the browser cannot read. It uploads the files.
Zamzar is the small-file option: 50 MB general, 2 files per 24 hours. It is fine for one short WAV and not for a folder.
ffmpeg is the unattended local option. A for loop converts a folder without a browser tab, and it supports VBR. The cost is a command line and an install.
What we did not test
- We did not benchmark 500 files on any service.
- We did not test each service’s per-file settings.
- We did not test every server’s ZIP behaviour.
- We did not compare output quality with a blind test.
The table is a map of public limits and batch models, not a lab report.
Who should not use this site
The browser batch tool is the wrong choice when:
- The folder has hundreds of files and must run unattended.
- Each file needs a different bitrate.
- Each file needs its own target size.
- The source is a codec the browser cannot decode.
- You need VBR.
- You need an API.
FreeConvert, CloudConvert or ffmpeg is the better answer for those jobs.
Which one fits
| Job | Better choice |
|---|---|
| 20 WAVs, watched, no upload | convertwavtomp3.com |
| One file, target 50 MB | convertwavtomp3.com |
| 500 WAVs, unattended | ffmpeg or a paid server plan |
| Per-file settings | FreeConvert, CloudConvert or ffmpeg |
| An API | CloudConvert or FreeConvert |
| A short clip on a phone | Zamzar or convertwavtomp3.com |
The target-size caveat
The target-size control is bitrate math: target bytes × 8 ÷ duration. It is a single-file control because a batch of files with different durations would need a different bitrate for each one.
A 60-minute file with a 50 MB target needs about 111 kbps, so the tool uses 112 kbps CBR. A two-hour file with a 10 MB target cannot reach it: the MP3 floor of 32 kbps still produces about 28.8 MB. The page says so instead of missing the limit silently.
Verdict
For a folder of WAVs and a target file size, the browser batch tool is the shortest route. For hundreds of files, per-file settings or an unattended job, FreeConvert, CloudConvert or ffmpeg is the realistic choice.
The useful question is not “which converter has the most formats”. It is “how many files, how big, and who is watching the queue?”.
FAQ
What is Convertio's free limit?
Convertio's public pages disagree. Its help center says 1 GB per file, 10 conversion credits per 24 hours and 10 concurrent conversions; its terms still describe 100 MB, 2 concurrent conversions and 10 conversion minutes per 24 hours. Both were checked on 23 October 2026. Plan for the stricter number.
Which alternative is best for 500 WAVs?
ffmpeg for an unattended local batch, or a paid server plan. The browser queue is sequential and intended for a folder you can watch; 500 files would take a long time and keep the tab open.
Does convertwavtomp3.com have a folder picker?
No. The browser does not expose a reliable folder picker across Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Drop the files or select several in the picker; the queue processes them one at a time.
Can I set a target size for each file in a batch?
No. Target size is a single-file control because it depends on each file's duration. The batch uses one fixed bitrate.
Is this list paid placement?
No. This site is one of the tools listed, which is disclosed above. There are no affiliate links or paid placements. Competitor limits come from their public pages and are dated.
